Our Environmental Promise to You

Welcome to Sugarloaf Lodge. We hope you enjoy your experience with us.

We believe in protecting the beautiful environment of Matakana; and New Zealand and want to ensure that your children and grandchildren can visit and enjoy it too. To this end, we have developed an environmental plan and welcome your support for this initiative.

Most of our customers want to help so we invite you to join with us by enjoying our hospitality and understanding our environmental policy.

We are reducing our demand on energy by:

  • Buying local produce where possible to reduce emissions
  • Having timers on exterior lighting equipment
  • Line drying our washing wherever possible.

Reducing our waste by:

  • Recycling our rubbish thereby reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
  • Reducing packaging to a minimum by not using single-packaged portions, using dispensers for high-quality toiletries, buying products in bulk, replacing disposable items with reusable ones.
  • We try to reduce waste by not purchasing products with excessive packaging.

Conserving water by:

  • Using our filtered waste water on parts of the garden
  • Relying on rain water which is tanked

Reducing pollution by:

  • Using only biodegradable or non toxic cleaning products
  • Washing our vehicles on grass so cleaning products don't enter drains
  • Regularly tuning our vehicles to help reduce carbon emissions
  • Have limited exterior lighting, on timers, so as to not disturb wildlife or neighbours
  • Send batteries and fluorescent bulbs for recycling or safe disposal

Participate in supporting the community, wildlife conservation and regeneration of native forests:

  • Contribute a large number of hours to Matakana Information Centre, Matakana Wine Coast, Warkworth A&P, Omaha Golf Club committee and TOSSI.
  • Planting trees and shrubs which are native to this area in order to encourage bird life and reduce need for irrigation.
  • Supporting regeneration of native New Zealand forests and wildlife conservation by supporting TOSSI (Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society Incorporated).
  • Purchasing locally, which helps reduce carbon emissions from transport.

We understand that we are part of our local community and participate in it by:

  • Donating supplementary products and goods to local charities.
  • Buying locally produced quality produce where possible.
