  • From Auckland, drive north on State Highway 1 across Auckland Harbour Bridge to Warkworth - 45 minutes.
  • Option to take the toll free road through Orewa and Waiwera, or the toll road.  Toll of $2 can be paid at the BP station on the south side of the tunnel or just after exiting the tunnel on the north side.  The pay station is on the right hand side of the road.
  • Turn right at second traffic lights onto Matakana Road, following signs to Matakana, Omaha Beach and Leigh.
  • From Bay of Islands take State Highway 1 from Kawakawa through Whangarei to Warkworth and turn left at first set of traffic lights, bearing left up the hill, following signs for Matakana, Omaha Beach and Leigh
  • Once you reach Matakana go straight ahead at the roundabout.  You will now be on Leigh Road.  We are two km from the bridge.  You will pass the Matakana Country Park entrance on your right, drive about 500 metres beyond Country Park until you reach Pukematekeo driveway and Sugarloaf Lodge sign on left. (Once you have past the Country Park we are the fifth driveway on the left.)
  • Take main driveway, veer left at first branch of driveway (signposted to Sugarloaf Lodge) and keep left up the curved driveway until you reach the Lodge.
  • Our GPS co-ordinate on Google Maps is -36.337685, 174.728279. Please disregard the fact that it says "1066a Leigh Road" (and also the fact that Google Maps has Sugarloaf Lodge further down the road.  We are in the process of trying to fix that!)

Driving tips for overseas visitors

  • In New Zealand all traffic drives on the left hand side of the road.
  • Wearing a seatbelt in front and rear seats is a legal requirement.
  • Speed limits are 50 kilometres per hour in built up areas, 70 km/h where marked on the outskirts of towns and villages, and 100 km/h on motorways and open roads, unless otherwise signposted
  • Where there is no "Stop" or "Give Way" sign, you must give way to traffic on your right. Traffic turning right at a junction has priority over left turning traffic.
  • No parking on single or double yellow lines.
