About Us

Vanessa and Allan Barber have lived in New Zealand for 30 years after emigrating from Great Britain. They built Sugarloaf Lodge as their dream home to enjoy and share with guests from all parts of the world.

Having travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, North and South America, they understand and appreciate other cultures and perspectives. Now they enjoy welcoming visitors from all over the world to their home where you can relax in the delightful atmosphere of Sugarloaf Lodge.

There is no doubt that Allan and Vanessa are both talented and creative. Allan has a degree in Modern Languages from Cambridge University and speaks fluent French and German.  Allan works as a strategic business adviser and enjoys freelance agricultural journalism as a stimulating sideline.

Vanessa is passionate about art and interior design. Her talents are evident at the lodge where she has created a restful atmosphere with a wonderful sense of style. With a love of gardening and landscaping, and an obvious affinity with Matakana, Vanessa has also woven her personal style into the land that surrounds Sugarloaf Lodge.
